HAVE A HEART - GIVE UP SMOKING!

Today I read in a newspaper that 31 May is World Smokefree Day. The theme for 2009 is "Give quiting a go - you can do it!"

On 3 December 2003, an amendment to the Smoke-free Environments Act (SPEA) 1990 was passed in New Zealand. The amendment requires that :
- Buildings and grounds of schools and early childhood centres are smoke free
- Licensed premises (bars, restaurants, cafes, sports clubs, casinos) are smoke free indoors
- Workplaces - including offices, factories, warehouse, work canteens and ‘smoke’ rooms are smoke free
- The display of tobacco products in retail outlets are restricted, and a ‘smoking kills’ sign must be visible near the display
- Herbal smoking products are included in the smoke free requirements
- Access to smoking products to under 18 years old is restricted

These requirements are designed to protect non smokers from second hand smoke. Some of other purpose are to regulate the marketing, advertising and promotion of tobacco products, and to monitor and regulate the presence of harmful constituents in tobacco products and tobacco smoke.

Smoking can cause diseases cardiovascular disease or lung disease. Changes the lifestyle such as exercice, weight management, and stopping smoking can significantly reduce the risk of the disease. So, if you want to have a heart, give up smoking.
